A selection of the best articles about politics, business and life on the Rock from the last seven days.

The Commonwealth Games Federation is in the news, saying it will help Gibraltar overcome any blocking of its participation in international events due to disagreements between Spain and the UK over sovereignty. Inside the Games is among the sites reporting it, quoting the Gibraltar Chronicle as it goes. GBC is suggesting that Gib may get a donation from the European Athletics Board so sport is very much on the agenda.

A more sedate activity, physically at least, is chess. The New Statesman reported on the launch of the chess tournament this week and after a first round draw, Viswanathan Anand has started to make serious ground according to NDTV Sports.

Tourists can now enjoy that tournament and the many other events following this year in the Rock’s first hybrid taxi, says Euro Weekly. Environment is very much part of the government’s agenda so we’ll see how quickly more such vehicles arrive.

The big news, though, had to be the nearby earthquake that shook the peninsula according to the Gibraltar Chronicle. No damage done, nobody hurt although everybody felt it; you can only hope none of the chess pieces were shaken into a different position…
